The Coming of Man is a retelling of the Aboriginal Tale of the birth of mankind. Conflating a few stories from the culture, mankind is hewn from the rocks and mud of the earth by two brother stars, who felt sorry for the souls trapped within the land. The rainbow serpent observes and is the universe about them, echoing the serpentine form of chaos in The Birth of Creation.
The coming of Man is part of an ongoing series of watercolor and ink paintings called Out of the Darkness. This series retells the movement out of savagery and violence through a lens of shared global mythology. Pieces 1-5 of Out of the Darkness were awarded second place overall at South Bay Contemporary’s All Themes Considered juried show, 2014.
