Ty Underwood was the second reported trans woman murdered in the United States in 2015. Trans women of color (TWOC) are especially susceptible to violent deaths. The life expectancy of TWOC, due in large part to violence, is a medieval 35 years old.
Ty Underwood is the second piece in an ongoing series, #TransIsBeautiful. Each piece is painted in reds and blues with negative white space as a dramatic contrasting element. This red, white and blue color scheme reflects the citizenship of the women and the culture which produced their deaths. Paint is splattered across the pristine white of each page, representing the violence each woman faced.
