In 1970, Howard Efland was beaten to death by officers of the LAPD. In 1998, Matthew Shepard was lured, beaten and tortured to death. He was left alone to die in an empty field. Joshua Wilkerson was beaten to death and his body burned in 2010. All three men were murdered because they are gay. In early 2015, a lawyer in California presented a bill that colloquially became known as the “Kill the Gays Bill.” #GayLivesMatter confronts the devastating effects of homophobia by overlaying the images of these men with the hateful bill produced earlier this year.
The layered portrait of each many floats behind the controversial text of the unacceptable bill.
