The California Quail is a stately bird, though of a diminutive size. This king among the aviary community is quite sociable in family groups. As a boy, I remember delighting with my brother and sister as we’d watch the birds trot past. They’d make single-file lines, the father in the front with his crest prominently displayed and his tiny brood following behind. My favorite time was just after the rains. The desert would smell of wetness and quail, as soon as the sky cleared, were out in the damp, foraging for food.
