A Portrait of Ty Underwood – #ArttoEndViolence

Ty Underwood was found shot to death on January 26, 2015. She was likely killed while attempting to flee in her car. Ty was the second trans woman of color killed in 2015. Her death is emblematic of a culture of violence directed at trans women. She was 24 years old. This occurred in North Tyler, Texas.

#ArttoEndViolence is a series of paintings, watercolor and mixed media, dedicated to highlighting the violence experienced by Trans, Gay, and Black citizens within the United States. The titular piece to the series, of which Ty Underwood is a part, recently won an Award of Excellence in Fine Art at The California State Fair. Pieces from the collection have appeared and are available in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Laguna Beach and Sacramento.
